IRVINGTON: Let’s Compost!

The Village of Irvington, the Irvington Public Library, the O’Hara Nature Center, and the Greenburgh Nature Center are offering compost bins and rain barrels at deep discounts for a limited time! Order online today at www.westchestercompostersale.ecwid.com—the offer ends June 22, 2017!

Samples of one type of composter (the Earth Machine) and the rain barrel can be seen at the Irvington Farmers Market this Sunday, June 18. There are other types of composters as well as composting equipment available for order at the website.

Pick-up is on Saturday, June 24, at the Irvington Public Library, 12 S. Astor St., Irvington, from 9 am-1 pm. During that time, a master composter will be available to demonstrate and to answer questions about composting.

Why Compost?

Organic waste comprises thirty percent of household trash going into Westchester incinerators, where it has no chance to naturally return to the soil to feed new life and generates very little BTUs for conversion to energy. Homeowners who compost not only extend the life of our incinerators and reduce the cost of collecting household garbage, but also recycle the nutrients in organic waste to create a valuable soil amendment for their gardens. Keeping compostable organic waste out of the trash also saves taxpayer money because it reduces the volume and weight of trash for which the Village must pay fees to dispose of.
