From the Mayor’s Desk…January 15, 2015

This is the first “Mayor’s Desk” email for 2015, so I’d like to start it by wishing you a very happy and healthy new year.  The holiday season is clearly over as there is a lot going on in our Village, so let us get to it:

Brightview Senior Living

Brightview Senior Living has submitted a petition requesting the Board of Trustees to amend the Irvington Zoning Code so as to permit Brightview to construct a 150-unit assisted living facility at 88-94 North Broadway (the site of the big white office building on the east site of Broadway). The facility they are proposing to build would contain 85 Independent Living units and 65 Assisted Living units. The proposal is to remove the existing white building, but to retain the three small stone buildings on the site.

The Board of Trustees intends to be lead agency during the required environmental review.  Although they have previously appeared informally in front of the Board of Trustees, we expect Brightview to do a public presentation at an upcoming meeting, likely January 26 or February 2.  Our meetings start at 7 p.m.  Please keep an eye out for an announcement about the presentation date.  In the meantime, a detailed outline of the expected review process along with all documents that have been filed are available on the Village’s web site at  I encourage you to stay involved throughout the process.

Third Thursdays

On the third Thursday of each month, Sunnyside Federal Savings & Loan hold special events to bring together business owners, local political leaders, and the general public. This Thursday it's time to meet the local authors of some terrific books!  The event is tonight, January 15, 2015, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the bank offices located at 56 Main Street.  No need to RSVP and you don’t need to stay the entire time.  Just stop by to sample some great food, have a drink and meet local authors!

Youth Baseball and Softball Registration

It warms my heart, just a little anyway, to think about baseball and softball as we’re stuck in the deep freeze.  But, believe it or not, registration for these great programs began last night.  However, if you want to take advantage of the early bird discount, you must register by February 11.  The Recreation Department has extended hours on certain nights, so visit the Recreation Department web site for complete details.

Although I like to think that we are always working on the budget, the formal process will be kicking off in the coming weeks.  So please be sure to watch for announcements about department workshops and hearings on the budget. It is my goal to, once again, come in under the State’s 2% tax cap and the Board of Trustees always appreciates your thoughtful comments about the budget and service levels in Irvington.

I hope to see you around the Village, please never hesitate to contact me with thoughts and concerns.
